Banning online gambling easier said than done?
Karnataka will introduce a law to ban online betting and gambling in the upcoming Legislature session starting on Monday. Telangana was one of the first States to introduce such a ban in 2017. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh have already banned online gambling. The proposed ban is expected to face a legal challenge. There is a national policy on the issue. It will be a continuous fight to pull down these mushrooming portals. If they are not blocked, the laws by State governments will only help them penalise and punish gamblers and organisers.
HC nudge. The State government decided on the ban with a nudging from the High Court of Karnataka. Horse racing and lottery will be exempted. Draft amendments expand the definition of gambling to include both offline and online gambling.
