AL Senator All-In on Bringing Gambling to his Constituents
Alabama is one of the few U.S. states without a lottery. The state's sports betting bill was rejected in the last session. The proposal was brought by state Senator Greg Albritton. He is trying to change the minds of fellow lawmakers and tribal leaders in Alabama to embrace a lucrative market.
It could be because the broad scope of Albritton's ideas has created too many roadblocks to bypass.
Senator is working with House members and reaching out to the governor's office to reach a consensus on bringing gambling to his constituents.
Albritton wants to bring casinos, sports betting and the lottery to Alabama. There are currently three casinos in Alabama, owned and operated by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, plus a racino, Victoryland, in Macon.
Sen. Albritton tried to introduce proposals to bring casinos, legal sports betting and a state lottery to Alabama in 2022. The proposal was rejected by other lawmakers and Governor Kay Ivey.
Alabama needs to take control of the gaming industry.
Alabama Bingo Halls oppose Sen. Albritton's proposal to bring gambling to Alabama. The bill AlBritton proposed named specific bingo halls as potential sites for this new sports betting market. Industry leaders thought that was “picking losers and winners” and wanted to give every location a shot at this operation via open bidding. Alabama's next legislative session is scheduled to start on January 9, 2023 and will adjourn on the last day of April.
