BUTTERWORTH: Ten individuals have been arrested here for alleged involvement in an unlicensed public lottery and online gambling.

North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the suspects comprised six men and four women, aged between 17 and 51.

He said on Thursday (May 20) the suspects were rounded up in raids carried out over two days at nine premises in the Butterworth, Mak Mandin and Kepala Batas areas of north Seberang Prai.

“The raids were carried out from Tuesday (May 18) at approximately 8.30pm until Wednesday (May 19) at approximately 7pm.

“Acting on information given, a police team from the North Seberang Prai D7 division with the assistance and cooperation of the Butterworth police station chief and state police D7 division team conducted the raids.

“Led by eight senior officers together with 55 members, they conducted raids and inspections at several premises in the area," he said in a statement.

Among other items, police confiscated three slips of paper believed to be linked to an illegal public lottery, two portable printers, 15 mobile phones, three mobile data printers, a receipt book containing a record of numbers believed related to online gambling top-ups, and some cash.

“All the items were brought back to the district police headquarter for further action, ” ACP Noorzainy said.

He added that police have instructed Tenaga Nasional Berhad to cut the power supply to all the premises raided under Section 21(A) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 to ensure that the activities do not resume.

“We will continue conducting Ops Dadu Bersepadu in the district from time to time.

“The case will be investigated under Section 4A (a) and 4 (1) (c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, ” he said.
